Building new features gets you glory, promotions, and LinkedIn posts about "innovation." Maintaining existing code gets you bug tickets at 4:57 PM on Friday, legacy spaghetti code that makes you question your life choices, and zero recognition. The person who stays behind to maintain it? They're not the hero we deserve—they're the hero who got stuck with the short straw and is now drowning in JIRA tickets while everyone else is off building "revolutionary" features that will also need maintenance in six months.
