COBOL assignments are already punishment enough without the professor's commentary. First they tell you to add comments, so you write "*> move A to B" which is literally just repeating what the code says in slightly different words. Then they hit you with the "explain WHY not WHAT" lecture, so you craft these beautiful explanatory comments about copying values around. The code went from self-documenting to over-documented faster than a mainframe processes a batch job. Nothing says "I understand good practices" quite like explaining why you're moving variables in a language where everything is already painfully verbose.

Ah, string manipulation in different languages - where consistency goes to die. Java's split() and C#'s Split() both follow sensible naming conventions, but then PHP comes along with explode() like that one developer who insists on naming variables after Pokémon characters. Ten years into my career and I still have to Google this function name every time I touch PHP code. It's like the language was designed by someone who thought "How can I make this as confusing as possible for people coming from literally any other language?"

It's that special moment when the client decides "hey, let's completely revamp everything" right before launch day. The project lead is taking all the hits while the junior dev stands safely in the background, arms crossed, blissfully unaware of the requirements apocalypse unfolding. Classic software development lifecycle - where "final requirements" are just a mythical concept and project timelines are more like... suggestions.
