Back To The Prompt Future

Back To The Prompt Future
The evolution of command-line interfaces is a beautiful tragedy. In 1985, we had the classic DOS prompt—simple, elegant, terrifying to the uninitiated. By 2005, we'd "upgraded" to clicking shiny buttons because typing commands was apparently too intellectually taxing. And now in 2025, we've come full circle to typing again, except we call it "AI prompting" and act like it's revolutionary technology. Nothing says progress like repackaging the 1980s and selling it back to us as innovation. The command line never died; it just got better marketing.

1989: "Imagine the technological marvels we'll create with computers in 30 years!" 2020: "So I've simulated 1,000 T-Rexes fighting 80,000 chickens. For science." Ah yes, the pinnacle of computing power - dinosaur-poultry warfare. Somewhere in a server farm, a CPU is thinking, "I was designed to cure cancer, but here we are."

Remember when we thought we'd train AI to help us write code? Top panel: cute little AI cub learning from the wise software engineer master. Bottom panel: six months later, that same AI has evolved into a towering beast while we're still sitting there with our legacy code knowledge from 2019. The career progression timeline has been dramatically compressed. Took me 15 years to become a tech lead. Took AI about 15 minutes to make half my StackOverflow contributions irrelevant. But hey, at least I still know how to exit Vim. For now.
