These people generally fail to get their payday. For others, it's a driving compulsion to be "god over the little box under the desk" These people can be moderately successful, but they tend to be just as obsessive in other parts of their life, and so they self-sabotage. And other people do it because "it's their calling", and the have the proper attributes, like a very large short term memory, a knack for problem solving, a knack for seeing things as a system built up from discrete components, are good with languages, particularly punning, such that computer languages come easy to them.
