C Strings Are Not Safe

Epic Games executive catching someone manually writing C++ code in 2024 is like finding a cryptid in the wild. You'd think they'd be using Blueprints or at least some visual scripting system, but no—someone went full masochist mode and decided to wrestle with pointers and memory management by hand. The executive's disappointment is palpable, like discovering your senior engineer still uses goto statements unironically. Nothing says "job security through incomprehensibility" quite like raw C++ in a game engine that literally exists to help you avoid writing it.

Python gets roasted for being slow, so it does what any reasonable language would do: outsources the heavy lifting to C libraries. NumPy, Pandas, TensorFlow? All running on C under the hood. It's like claiming you're a great chef when you're just really good at ordering takeout. The reply takes it further. Software thinks it's so smart, but it's just instructions running on silicon. Every program is basically cheating by using hardware to do the actual work. Your GPU rendering those graphics? Hardware. Your CPU executing those loops? Also hardware. Software is just middle management taking credit for the workers' output. It's turtles all the way down, except the turtles are all calling each other cheaters.

Python developers looking at pointers like they've been handed instructions in ancient Sumerian. "Memory address? We don't do that here." Python abstracts away memory management so thoroughly that asking a Python dev about pointers is like asking a fish about bicycle maintenance. They've heard rumors such things exist in the C/C++ wilderness, but they've been living in garbage-collected luxury for too long to remember the details.

C++ developers crushing under the weight of compile-time errors while JavaScript developers happily building staircases with runtime disasters that'll explode in production. One breaks your build, the other breaks your soul at 2AM when customers call. The difference? C++ punishes you immediately; JavaScript waits until you've deployed to 10,000 users. Choose your poison.

The programming language family portrait nobody asked for but everyone needed! Papa C sits proudly with his offspring, each representing their true nature in the coding ecosystem. C# is the well-behaved child still following Dad's rules. JavaScript is the rebellious teenager with that "I'll do things MY way" hairstyle. Java looks suspiciously like the neighbor who's always borrowing sugar. PHP is that kid who somehow functions despite all odds. Objective C is just trying to stay relevant in the corner. And Lisp? Lisp is the cat because nobody understands what it's saying but it's somehow essential to the household. The family that compiles together, stays together... except JavaScript, who's definitely moving out to become a rockstar.

The top panel shows a man pointing a gun with the caption "A null pointer exception in production." This is basically the coding equivalent of your app suddenly committing suicide in front of users. The bottom panel shows someone wrapped in a protective cocoon labeled "Me, wrapping the entire function in a giant try...catch block." It's the programming equivalent of bubble-wrapping your entire house because you dropped a glass once. Sure, it's lazy, inefficient, and would make your CS professor weep, but hey—at least the app doesn't crash! Ship it and let future-you deal with the technical debt. That's what code reviews are for, right?
