Fruit Scale Still Runs Windows CE

Nothing says "mission-critical infrastructure" quite like weighing bananas with an operating system from 1996. Windows CE (Compact Edition) was Microsoft's answer to embedded systems, and apparently some grocery store scales took that relationship way too seriously.

The real comedy here is that someone's probably getting paid enterprise-level support fees to keep this ancient embedded OS running just so Karen can verify her produce is exactly 0.47 pounds. Meanwhile, the scale's probably got a 32MB processor struggling harder than a junior dev on their first production deployment.

Fun fact: Windows CE was discontinued in 2013, but embedded systems are basically digital cockroaches—they never die. They just keep chugging along in ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and apparently fruit scales, running code that's older than some of the developers maintaining it. The "FTPUpdate" folder visible on the desktop is the cherry on top—nothing screams security like FTP in 2024.
