We Are Not The Same

So someone enthusiastically declares C as their favorite language, and the drunk committee member in the back immediately starts screaming the truth: vector<bool> is neither a proper vector nor does it actually store bools. It's a "space-optimized" abomination that packs bits together, breaking the entire mental model of what a vector should be. You can't even get pointers to individual elements because they're bit-packed. The C++ standards committee really thought "hey, let's make this one specific template specialization behave completely differently from every other vector type" and then went home for the day. It violates the principle of least astonishment so hard that seasoned C++ devs still get caught by it. The committee member is having a meltdown because this design decision haunts them to this day.

You spend months building a custom graphics engine, optimizing every shader, implementing fancy rendering techniques, writing beautiful abstraction layers. Then someone boots it up on hardware from the Obama administration and you watch your masterpiece crumble like a sandcastle in a tsunami. It takes 1 minute to explain why C++ is great (raw power, performance, control). It takes 2 minutes to list everything wrong with it (segfaults, undefined behavior, template error messages that require a PhD to decode, memory management nightmares, the build system situation, and don't even get me started on the standard committee). Love-hate doesn't even begin to describe it. It's more like Stockholm syndrome with pointers.

So Microsoft wants to eliminate C and C++ by 2030 using AI to rewrite their entire codebase. Because nothing says "brilliant strategy" like letting algorithms rewrite millions of lines of battle-tested code that's been running critical systems for decades. The hubris is *chef's kiss*. They're so busy flexing their AI muscles that they forgot to ask the most important question: just because you CAN automate the rewriting of foundational infrastructure doesn't mean you SHOULD. What could possibly go wrong with AI touching code that powers Windows, Office, and Azure? It's not like memory safety bugs are subtle or anything. The Jeff Goldblum meme from Jurassic Park is the perfect response here. They were so preoccupied with whether they could use AI to eliminate C/C++, they didn't stop to think if they should. Because replacing decades of institutional knowledge and battle-hardened code with AI-generated Rust (presumably) is definitely going to go smoothly. No edge cases, no undefined behavior gotchas, just pure algorithmic magic. Sure.

The documentation makes multithreading look like a beautiful parade of orderly buses gliding smoothly down the street—so elegant, so synchronized, so *chef's kiss*. Then you actually implement it and suddenly you've got a catastrophic intersection pileup where nothing moves, everything's blocking everything else, and someone's honking their mutex in frustration. Race conditions? Deadlocks? A complete traffic jam of chaos? Welcome to the glamorous world of concurrent programming, where your threads are about as coordinated as buses trying to occupy the same physical space. Spoiler alert: physics doesn't allow that, and neither does your CPU.

The emperor has no clothes, and the singleton has no excuse! Someone finally said what we've all been thinking but were too polite to admit in code reviews. You can dress up your global variable in a fancy getInstance() method, add some lazy initialization, throw in some thread-safety concerns, and call it a "design pattern" all you want—but at the end of the day, you're still accessing the same single instance from anywhere in your codebase like it's 1995. It's literally just global state with extra steps and a superiority complex. The Singleton pattern strutted into town acting all sophisticated with its private constructor and controlled access point, but really it's just your good old global variable wearing a tuxedo to the function. Both will haunt your testing suite and make dependency injection cry in the corner.
