Behind Every AI Is Another AI

Junior developers turning their heads away from perfectly good documentation and help resources to stare longingly at the siren call of ChatGPT with half-baked prompts. The eternal struggle of tech leads everywhere - watching their team ignore centuries of accumulated wisdom in favor of asking an AI "how 2 center div plz?" and then implementing whatever hallucinated garbage it spits out. The documentation might as well be written in invisible ink at this point.

Startups in 2024: "We can't afford competitive salaries or decent benefits, sorry." Also startups: *Drops $500k/month on OpenAI API credits for their chatbot that nobody asked for*. The AI gold rush has VCs throwing money at anything with "agent" in the pitch deck while actual human developers are getting equity that's worth less than Monopoly money. Because why hire three senior engineers when you can subscribe to five different AI tools that hallucinate code and call it "autonomous development"? Fun fact: The average AI agent subscription costs more per month than what some startups pay their junior devs. Priorities, people.

Remember when programmers were basically coding demigods who could bend computers to their will? Now we're just sad creatures Googling "how to center div" for the 500th time and begging AI to fix our mistakes. The golden age programmer wrote code without StackOverflow, crafted entire games in Assembly (you know, that language that makes you want to cry), manually fixed memory leaks with pointers, and literally hand-coded the software that put humans on the freaking moon. Meanwhile, modern programmers are trapped in Vim wondering why :q doesn't work, fixing one bug only to create three more like some kind of hydra nightmare, and asking ChatGPT to solve problems we should probably understand ourselves. The decline is real, folks. But hey, at least we have dark mode now.

Nothing says "I care about this project" quite like a 47-paragraph ticket that reads like a doctoral thesis but was actually generated by ChatGPT in 3 seconds. You open it expecting clarity, instead you get five pages of corporate buzzwords, redundant acceptance criteria, and suspiciously perfect formatting. The real kicker? Buried somewhere in paragraph 23 is the actual requirement: "make button blue." Meanwhile you're sitting there like a rain-soaked anime protagonist, dead inside, knowing you'll have to parse through this AI slop to figure out what they actually want. The ticket looks impressive in standup though, so there's that.

OH. MY. GOD. This is the most accurate representation of AI chatbots trying to make sense of legacy code I've ever witnessed! 💀 That poor soap dispenser desperately trying to pump life into that sad, sunken bar of soap is LITERALLY every AI tool we've thrown at our 20-year-old codebase. "Here, ChatGPT, please fix this spaghetti monster written by three developers who all quit in 2007!" The AI is just there pumping away with absolutely ZERO results while the ancient code just sits there... menacingly... refusing to evolve. I can't even with how painfully real this is!

You've got all the big tech players showing up to the AI party in their finest attire—OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google, Microsoft—looking absolutely fabulous and ready to burn billions on compute. Meanwhile, NVIDIA is sitting alone on the curb eating what appears to be an entire sheet cake, because they're the only ones actually making money in this whole circus. Everyone else is competing to see who can lose the most venture capital while NVIDIA just keeps selling GPUs at markup prices that would make a scalper blush. They're not at the party, they ARE the party.
