Remember when you could buy a high-end GPU without taking out a second mortgage? Yeah, me neither at this point.
The GTX 1080 Ti launched at $699 MSRP back in 2017. Fast forward to today and the RTX 5080 is dropping at $1800+. That's not inflation—that's straight-up highway robbery with RGB lighting. The kid asking Santa for "reasonably priced graphics cards" has about the same odds as getting an actual dragon.
Between crypto mining booms, AI training demand, scalpers, and Nvidia realizing gamers will pay literally anything to run Cyberpunk at 144fps, GPU pricing has entered the fantasy realm. At least dragons are cool. A $1800 price tag just hurts.
Pre-crypto prices indeed. Those were the days when your biggest worry was whether you had enough PCIe power connectors, not whether you needed to sell a kidney.
