You know what's worse than bad UX? Deliberately malicious UX. Making users manually type dates in a date picker—one character at a time—is like forcing someone to assemble IKEA furniture with a spoon. Sure, it technically works, but you're actively choosing violence.
Date pickers exist to save users from the nightmare of figuring out if it's MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD. But some developers look at that convenience and think "nah, let's make them click through a calendar widget just to enter their birthday from 1987." Bonus points if the picker defaults to the current year and they have to click the back arrow 37 times.
The boiler room of hell is reserved for these folks, right next to the people who disable paste in password fields and make you click "I'm not a robot" three times.
