When your database engine is mid-transaction, about to execute some critical operation, and then—BOOM—power outage. Now it's sitting there in digital limbo, desperately trying to remember what it was doing before everything went dark. It's literally interrogating itself like "Was I updating that row? Committing? Rolling back? Did I flush to disk yet?"
This is why transaction logs and write-ahead logging exist—so your database doesn't have to play detective every time someone trips over the power cord. But in that brief moment of confusion, it really is just talking to the wall, hoping the answer will magically appear in the brick pattern.
