It is by far the biggest, most complicated, ugly, down-right dangerous language you can use. But it does run fast. It takes at least twice as long to program in C as any other major language (except C). The men who program in C are Real Men. The women who program in C are Real Men too. Not a grad degree in Analytics or Physics or Computer Science, a grad degree in Stats. Biostats, Operations Research, and Econometrics are cool though. I build models properly. If you don't have a grad degree in Stats, your models suck. No two ways about it. There are dozens of things you don't know to test and control for, and your model is wildly inaccurate. Outside of CV and NLP, you are an absolute joke. You're a SWE? Good for you. But, that's a completely different skillset with little overlap. Akin to a Pharmacist performing surgery. I go to interviews with 'top' companies and get rejected for giving an answer that is too right. I explain it perfectly vs its alternatives and give all of the context needed. Then some SWE pretending to be a Statistician fails me because they don't know what I'm talking about, they want a crappy DL model because they don't have a clue. Apple, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, Linked OpenAl, etc. All have failed me in DS interviews despite perfect performances. All filled with CS tryhards. Even the HFTs are infested with CS dweebs who don't have a clue about DS. Sigma was asking me SWE questions in a Quant interview ffs. Google is my only option, there is nowhere else for me to go to be a real Statistician, believe me I've tried. Sucks knowing when you hit your ceiling and there is no alternative. Half of the Google DSs are now a joke too, have weaseled their way into convincing morons that they know what they are talking about. Sadly, these are the ones that politic into management and hire those of their ilk into the ranks in order to build their empires.
