There Can Be Only One Game Engine

Left: Game dev crying because Unity changed their pricing model and now they need a second mortgage to make a 2D platformer. Right: The bearded C++ developer who's been writing their own engine since 2003 and still hasn't released a game, but boy does that skybox rendering look crisp. It's the classic tradeoff - use a commercial engine and get destroyed by licensing fees, or build your own and get destroyed by feature creep. Either way, your game is never shipping.

The duality of a programmer's financial decision-making. Agonizing over a $50 purchase for basic necessities, but dropping $2500+ on a new PC with the emotional investment of someone commenting on the weather. "Yes, very sad. Anyway." The RAM wasn't going to upgrade itself, and those compile times weren't getting any shorter on the old machine. It's not an addiction if you can justify it with "productivity gains."

Behold, the desperate clarity of 5 AM coding. When documentation is just too formal and you need a method name that truly captures your state of mind. The best part? It's actually functional code that checks if the player is in the main menu or slaughtering enemies. Nothing says "I'll refactor this before code review" like a method name that would make HR file paperwork. Spoiler: it never gets refactored.

First, you're happy with 240 FPS. Then suddenly, it's not enough. The refresh rate addiction is real, folks. Once you've tasted that buttery smooth gameplay, there's no going back to the stuttery peasantry of lower framerates. Your bank account weeps silently as you justify "just one more" hardware upgrade for those precious extra frames that nobody else can even see. But you can see them... you swear you can.

Graphics card prices haven't been this fictional since cryptocurrency miners were building rigs in their mothers' basements. Manufacturers slap on MSRPs that belong in fantasy novels while retailers mark them up to "market value" – which is corporate speak for "whatever desperate gamers will pay." Nothing says "modern computing" like needing a second mortgage for a GPU that'll be obsolete before you finish paying it off.

Remember when video games were just... fun? Before you became a programmer and couldn't help but see the collision detection glitches, frame rate issues, and spaghetti code lurking beneath the surface? Now you're sitting there calculating the physics equations they used for that jump animation, mentally optimizing their render pipeline, and thinking "that NPC pathfinding algorithm must be A* with a custom heuristic." The curse of knowledge strikes again. You've peeked behind the curtain, and now you can't unsee the matrix. Gaming will never be the same, but hey—at least you can impress absolutely nobody by explaining why that texture is flickering.
