Oh honey, regex chose VIOLENCE and made it its entire personality. Someone asks if you find regex difficult and it responds by having a full meltdown, screaming incomprehensible hieroglyphics like ^[\w-\.]+@([\w-]+\.)+[\w-]{2,4}$ because apparently speaking in ancient curses is totally normal behavior.
Regular expressions really said "I'm going to make pattern matching as cryptic as possible" and succeeded beyond anyone's wildest nightmares. It's the only thing in programming where you write something once, it works, and then you look at it six months later wondering if you accidentally summoned a demon. Nobody ACTUALLY understands regex—we all just copy-paste from Stack Overflow and pray to the coding gods it works.
