I Hate Docker

The classic "just sprinkle some buzzwords on it" approach to software development! Management thinks moving to the cloud is a magical fix-all solution, then gets annoyed when developers suggest actual architectural changes. And of course, shouting "KUBERNETES!" is the corporate equivalent of yelling "ENHANCE!" at a blurry security camera. Spoiler alert: neither one magically fixes anything without the actual work behind it. The irony is that the boss is simultaneously demanding cloud solutions while rejecting the very practices (containerization, cloud-native architecture) that would make cloud migration successful. Tale as old as time: technical debt wrapped in buzzword bingo, served with a side of hypocrisy.

That baby's face is the exact expression of someone who just found out they're destined for a life of debugging YAML indentation errors and explaining to management why "just adding one more pod" isn't going to fix everything. Poor kid hasn't even mastered object permanence yet, but Dad's already planning his future of midnight alerts because some microservice decided to spontaneously combust. You know what's wild? After 10+ years in this industry, I can architect a distributed microservices system in my sleep, but ask me to get Node versions, Docker containers, environment variables, and database connections working on a fresh machine? Suddenly I'm googling "why is my localhost refusing connection" for the 847th time. The actual coding is just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface lurks the absolute monstrosity of dependency hell, conflicting Python versions, that one environment variable you forgot to set, Docker daemon not running, ports already in use, SSL certificates expired, and my personal favorite: "works on my machine" syndrome. Spent 30 minutes writing elegant code? Cool. Now spend 3 hours figuring out why your colleague's setup script doesn't work because they're on an M1 Mac and you're on Windows with WSL2 and nothing is compatible with anything anymore.

Job postings be like "Entry-level DevOps position - must have 10 years of Kubernetes experience" when K8s was released in 2014. Apparently, you need to be learning container orchestration in the womb now. Next they'll want you to have contributed to the Kubernetes codebase while still in utero. The DevOps job market has gotten so absurd that companies expect you to emerge from the birth canal already certified in three cloud platforms and fluent in YAML.

You start with one Raspberry Pi to self-host a simple web app. Fast forward six months and your living room looks like a data center with enough cables to trip an elephant, five different server racks, a UPS system that could power a small village, and an electricity bill that makes your significant other question your life choices. But hey, at least you're running your own email server that gets flagged as spam 90% of the time and a Plex server with 47TB of "Linux ISOs." The transformation from minimalist setup to full-blown homelab chaos is real. You tell yourself it's about learning and self-hosting, but deep down you know you just wanted an excuse to play with Docker containers at 2 AM while your electricity meter spins like a fidget spinner.

Every developer has uttered those fateful words: "It works on my machine!" – the universal excuse when code mysteriously fails elsewhere. Then some genius had the audacity to suggest, "What if we just shipped the entire machine?" and Docker containers were born. Instead of spending hours debugging environment differences, we now spend hours debugging Docker configuration files. Progress! The circle of developer suffering continues, just with fancier terminology and cooler logos.
