In Your Dreams

Tech journalist writes a whole article about privacy concerns with Google Sign-In, warning people not to "put all their eggs in one basket." Meanwhile, the website she's writing for literally has a big fat "Sign up with Google" button staring everyone in the face. The irony is chef's kiss level. Someone in editorial approved an article about avoiding Google authentication while their own dev team implemented OAuth with Google as probably the primary sign-up method. It's like writing "10 Reasons to Quit Coffee" for a Starbucks blog. Pretty sure the devs are somewhere laughing at the Slack notification about this article going live, knowing full well they just merged a PR last week to make the Google sign-in button even bigger.

In the Unix world, asking "what's the magic word" isn't about saying "please" – it's about typing "sudo" before your command. For the uninitiated, sudo (superuser do) temporarily grants you god-like powers over your system. Regular users are peasants until they utter this incantation. It's basically the difference between "I'd like to delete this critical system file" and "I WILL delete this critical system file, and you'll thank me for it."

Behind every sleek tech company is a production environment that looks exactly like this kid's room. The caption "ALL MODERN DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE" is just a fancy way of saying "we're all running critical systems on the digital equivalent of Lego blocks scattered across the floor." The teddy bear represents that one legacy system from 2003 that nobody understands but somehow keeps the entire operation running. Stepping on it barefoot at 2AM is basically what an outage feels like.

Ah yes, the dark ages of computing. Before FORTRAN showed up in 1956, programmers were just keyboard warriors in the most literal sense - manually toggling 0s and 1s like prehistoric savages. Nothing says "I'm having a productive day at work" like frantically flipping physical switches for eight hours straight while your coworkers wonder if you're having a seizure or actually programming something. The best part? Debugging meant checking if your finger slipped on switch #4,271. Good times.
