I'm That Friend...

Ah, the universal gamer solidarity against the bane of PC gaming existence. Nothing unites the gaming community quite like the collective disdain for having to install yet another launcher just to play a single game. Each publisher insisting you need their special software to launch their precious intellectual property. Origin, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, Rockstar, EA, 2K, Bethesda... it's like needing a different key for every door in your house. Meanwhile, your RAM weeps silently in the background as eight different launchers run simultaneously, each one updating when you least expect it. Just let me play the damn game already.

First panel: "Yay, no Creation Engine!" *happy face* Second panel: "Oh god, it's Unreal Engine 5..." *horrified face* Classic game dev monkey's paw. Bethesda finally ditches their ancient, duct-taped engine that's been spawning bugs since Morrowind, only to adopt the engine that'll turn Elder Scrolls 6 into another cookie-cutter open world with the exact same lighting and physics as every other AAA game. Next they'll tell us it has a battle royale mode and NFT collectibles. Just waiting for the day we get Skyrim: Fortnite Edition.

Left: Game dev crying because Unity changed their pricing model and now they need a second mortgage to make a 2D platformer. Right: The bearded C++ developer who's been writing their own engine since 2003 and still hasn't released a game, but boy does that skybox rendering look crisp. It's the classic tradeoff - use a commercial engine and get destroyed by licensing fees, or build your own and get destroyed by feature creep. Either way, your game is never shipping.

When you're a solo game developer, you're not just coding—you're the entire orchestra. One person desperately trying to handle game design, programming, art, sound, marketing, and bug fixing simultaneously. It's that special kind of chaos where your Git commit messages gradually evolve from "Implemented player movement" to "PLEASE WORK" at 4AM. The best part? When someone asks how your "little hobby" is going, and you're too exhausted to explain you haven't seen sunlight in three weeks.

LinkedIn optimization at its finest. Rejecting the harsh reality of "broke and unemployed" in favor of the much more impressive "full time indie game developer" – which is technically the same thing but with a Steam page that has 3 wishlists (all from family members). The resume gap becomes a "focused development period" and ramen dinners transform into "startup culture."

OH. MY. GOD. It's the Boston GPU Party! 💀 Instead of dumping tea into the harbor, these revolutionary programmers are HURLING GRAPHICS CARDS into the water! "No taxation without ray tracing!" they scream while tossing perfectly good NVIDIA GPUs overboard. The absolute DRAMA of it all! Can you IMAGINE wasting thousands of dollars worth of computing power just because of tariffs? The colonial gamers and machine learning engineers must be DEVASTATED watching their 4090s sink to the bottom of Boston Harbor. This is what happens when you mess with a developer's hardware budget, people! The revolution will NOT be rendered at low settings! 🔥
